Windshield wipers are easy to overlook and forget about. After all, they’re not something you use every day. But wipers are the only thing between you and a clear view of the road when the weather takes a turn for the worse. Here is some helpful information about this underappreciated safety feature.

Q: How long do windshield wipers last?

Wipers usually last 6 months to one year depending on the wiper blade material, weather conditions, how often they are used, and if the car is parked indoors our outdoors. Also, extreme heat or extreme cold will make the wiper blade deteriorate faster. But you should change your wipers if you see water streaks that the wiper doesn't clear, if the wiper blades are cracked or damaged, or if you hear screeching or noise from the wipers. Of course, choosing a premium wiper from Bosch or PIAA offer even greater durability and effectiveness.

Q: What is the difference between regular rubber wipers blades and silicone rubber wiper blades?

A typical blade is made from natural rubber, which is very cost-effective for their intended purpose. Premium natural rubber wiper blades, like those in Bosch wipers, have added features like graphite coatings for even higher performance.

Silicone rubber blades are even more effective at moving water across a glass surface. Premium silicone wipers like PIAA wipers provide even greater visibility by coating the windshield with silicone to promote continuous water beading in inclement weather. The effect is similar to popular windshield coatings but without the hazy side effects. Also, silicone rubber is twice as durable as traditional rubber, allowing them to perform better over a longer period of time.

Q: Do wiper blades lift off at high speeds?

Some wiper blades are not aerodynamic and can lift off at high speeds. This causes misswipes and can be dangerous. Bosch and PIAA both have wiper products that are aerodynamic.

Q: Do wipers need to be maintained?

Yes, simple maintenance can improve the performance and help extend the lifespan of your wipers. Here are some simple things you can do:

- Clean your wiper blades and your windshield of any dirt, insect stains, resins and pollen

- Regularly check the level of windshield washer

- Use proper windshield washer fluid, not just water

- Lift the wiper blades off the windshield when the vehicle is not in use
